These
historic buildings belong to everyone and we are taking advantage
of the Internet to make them more accessible to a wider audience.
Since
cultural activity is a powerful means of abolishing barriers and
bringing people together, our ancient buildings must be recognised
as a precious resource, connecting us with the richness of the past.
Such buildings are a vital part of our identity.
The
Jerónimos Monastery, the
Tower of Belém and the Chapel of St. Jerome have the potential to become lively and stimulating
places. In order for this to happen, they need not only to be recognised
as belonging to all humanity, but also to become part of the day-to-day
lives of those who live and work around them. It is those closest
to the buildings who can take on the responsibility of protecting
this unique part of our heritage. We believe that it is by doing
this that people start to become aware of the universal nature of
culture. By acknowledging our heritage at the local level, this
awareness can then spread until it becomes regional, national, and
eventually universal.
The year 2001
is an important moment in the history of the Jerónimos Monastery.
It is with great pride that earlier this year we celebrated the
anniversary of the laying of the first stone of the monastery on
6th January 1501. We want to share with everyone the
500th anniversary of the Jerónimos Monastery.
